Data Storage Converter
Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB with the correct SI or IEC factor.
Enter a storage amount and select its current unit. Then pick the target unit. The converter distinguishes between SI decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) and IEC binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB).
SI units use powers of 1000: 1 KB = 1000 B, 1 MB = 1,000,000 B, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 B, 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B. IEC units use powers of 1024: 1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 B, 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 B.
Use the swap button to reverse the conversion direction, for example from gigabytes to gibibytes and back.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 1 GB not the same as 1 GiB?
GB is a decimal unit: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB is a binary unit: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. They differ by about 7%.
When should I use IEC units like MiB and GiB?
Use them when working with memory, file systems or operating systems that measure in 1024-byte blocks. Use GB and TB for hard-drive marketing and network speeds.
How many bytes are in a terabyte?
One terabyte (TB) is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. One tebibyte (TiB) is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
